Bilaterals and other meetings along with the Shield of the Americas Summit in Florida, time off to inspire Team DR at WBC

President Luis Abinader had an intense weekend as he traveled to Miami, Florida in time to spend time with the DR Team that is competing in the World Baseball Classic. President Abinader was seen in the Dominican dugout at the loanDepot Park during the game played and won on Friday, 6 March 2026 against Nicaragua in the World Baseball Classic.

The next day, President Abinader attended the Saturday, 7 March 2026 Shield of the Americas Summit invited by US President Donald Trump. Abinader and Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez, who accompanied the President, also took advantage of the visit to advance in the trade and security talks with US officials and the regional heads of government, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Relations.

For the Caribbean: President Luis Abinader (Dominican Republic), President Mohamed Irfaan Ali (Guyana) and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of Trinidad & Tobago.
From Central America: President Rodrigo Chaves Robles (Costa Rica), Nayib Bukele Bukele (El Salvador), Nasry “Tito” Asfura (Honduras) and President José Raúl Mulino (Panama).
From South America: President Javier Milei (Argentina), President-elect José Antonio Kast (Chile), President Rodrigo Paz Pereira (Bolivia), President Daniel Noboa (Ecuador) and President Santiago Peña of Paraguay.

“The Dominican Republic reaffirms its commitment to security and hemispheric cooperation,” President Luis Abinader posted on his X account on the day of the Florida summit.

In its coverage of the presidential trip, Diario Libre reported that on Sunday, 8 March 2026, the Abinader received formal backing from the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AmChamDR). The organization noted that as one of only three Caribbean nations invited to the gathering, the country has been designated as a “Tier 1 strategic partner,” positioning it to receive “preferential trade status and infrastructure investments”.

As part of his official agenda during the “Shield of the Americas” summit, President Luis Abinader held a bilateral meeting with United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss the strengthening of commercial ties between the two nations, the Ministry of Foreign Relations reported. During the session, the officials addressed key issues regarding the enhancement of trade relations and explored new opportunities to expand economic cooperation. The dialogue also focused on promoting a more robust bilateral exchange, underscoring the strategic priority of the Dominican Republic’s economic partnership with the United States.

Abinader also took advantage of this high-level get-together to talk with US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. The conversation covered energy cooperation between the two nations. On the table was the recent authorization for a Dominican company to install a subterranean third power line connecting the DR with Puerto Rico.

In a significant sideline meeting during the “Shield of the Americas” summit in Miami, President Luis Abinader held a bilateral session with Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz Pereira to reinforce diplomatic ties and explore new avenues for regional cooperation. The two leaders discussed a shared agenda focused on continental stability and the development of joint initiatives designed to benefit both nations. Central to the dialogue was an expressed commitment to expanding bilateral trade and identifying fresh sectors for economic and technical collaboration between the Dominican Republic and Bolivia.
