Memorial events for Jet Set Club tragedy postponed due to weather

The “Justice for Jet Set Movement” announced the postponement of commemorative activities originally scheduled for Wednesday, 8 April 2026, marking the first anniversary of the structural collapse that claimed 236 lives, Listin Diario reported. The events have been rescheduled for Thursday, 9 April 2026, following emergency directives issued by authorities in response to heavy rainfall affecting several provinces since the early morning hours.

In a statement released via social media, the organization cited “force majeure” and the need to comply with safety protocols issued by relevant institutions as the primary reasons for the delay.

The original itinerary for Wednesday was set to begin at 10am with a mass led by Father Rogelio, followed by a formal tribute at 11am. Afternoon memorials were scheduled from 2pm to 5pm, concluding with a 7pm solemn Eucharist officiated by Coadjutor Archbishop Carlos Tomás Morel Diplán. These activities will now take place during the same time slots on Thursday, 9 April 2026.

On the evening of Tuesday, 7 April 2026, survivors and families of the victims held an emotional vigil featuring candles and hymns to mark the eve of the hour that forever changed the city.

The Jet Set nightclub disaster occurred at 12:44 am on Tuesday, 8 April 2025. The collapse resulted in 236 fatalities and approximately 180 injuries, according to the formal indictment filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office against siblings Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, the owners and administrators of the establishment.

The structural failure took place during one of the venue’s traditional “Lunes Bailables” (Dancing Mondays). At the moment of the collapse, legendary merengue artist Rubby Pérez was performing the song “De color de rosa.” He lost his life in the tragedy.
