Because neighborhood violence does not stop when the sun goes down, several of Santo Domingo?s more populous barrios are requesting 24-hour police and military presence. As a result of Operation Paloma, some community members have reported a ?slightly better atmosphere? but are still ready to move out if things go bad again. Other reports flow in about gangs in the Gualey district, where gangs of armed youths roam the streets with drawn weapons after eleven at night. According to Hoy, local community representatives are asking for the military and police patrols to continue long into the night. The requests come from Los Guandules, Gualey, Espaillat, La Ci?naga, and Las Ca?itas as well as other sectors in the northern part of Santo Domingo. A member of the Assembly of God Church told reporters that ?after six in the evening, people do not want to leave their homes.? In what used to be a quiet and hard working barrio next to the Ozama River, the residents of Los Guandules are trying to move away but their poverty does not make moving a viable option. Most people greeted the announcement about police patrols along the river with approval, and see the move as a positive step towards stopping the crime wave affecting the area.
