The Cathedral of Santo Domingo will remain closed to the public for two months during which it will undergo interior and exterior renovations, including the installation of central air conditioning, as reported in Diario Libre. The work was contracted by the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo to contractor Grupo Tecnico, according to engineer Roberson Lopez, a company spokesman. The cost of the works was not disclosed. Teams of workers have been on the site since last week, where demolition work is being carried out on part of the altar, which will be enlarged. The work includes removing the carpeting in the sanctuary around the altar and replacing it with marble. During the construction process, mass will be celebrated at other churches such as Las Mercedes and the Dominican Convent.
