Sticker deadline over

The director of the Tax Department (DGII) Vehicle Division, Alfredo Mirabal, has stated that legal action against drivers who fail to renew their vehicle license stickers within the established deadline is not the department’s responsibility, according to El Caribe. Stickers will continue to be available until 31 August, with a RD$300 surcharge. Mirabal explained that the law establishes what should happen to vehicles that don’t have up-to-date licenses, and he believes that the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) should establish the appropriate mechanism. He said that by allowing an extension they would be endorsing the negligence of drivers who did not make use of the 90 days allocated for the purchase of the stickers. Meanwhile, thousands of vehicle owners waited in long lines in more than 100 centers selling the stickers. The DGII estimates that over 100,000 vehicles have not yet had their stickers updated.
