Subero Isa objects to Ambassador’s interference

The President of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ), Jorge Subero Isa has voiced his objections to the Ministry of Foreign Relations against what he called the “impudent and unacceptable interference” by French Ambassador Jean Claude Moyret, in the internal affairs of the Judicial Branch. Subero Isa believes that Moyret’s interference hinders the traditional cooperation and friendship links between the French and Dominican judicial systems. Moyret had made a verbal request for the investigation of the judicial process against French citizens Prisse Steve Cristian and Ait Chic Mustapha, who have been charged with trafficking seven kilos of cocaine in Higuey. In his letter addressed to Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, Subero sustains that the ambassador has continuously wanted to conduct the case, and has even told Subero by telephone that he had not paid enough attention to the case, and that Dominican justice was “completely rotten”. Subero explained that the case involving the two French citizens was investigated, leading to the dismissal of the substitute judge of Higuey, Ambrosio Reyna Lugo, and the suspension of judge Rafael Cedano Gonzalez. Reyna Lugo had issued bail of RD$2 million in favor of the accused and Cedano Gonzalez’ verdict was “not guilty” on 15 July 2005. Ambassador Moyret had requested an investigation into the case.
