El Caribe reports that Dominican long distance swimmer Marcos Diaz, arrived in Santo Domingo yesterday after breaking the world record for the round trip swim across the Strait of Gibraltar last Monday. He was welcomed at Las Americas International Airport by a large crowd of fans brandishing posters, newspaper clippings and flags, asking for his autograph. “This is the best thing that could happen to me. I feel very happy,” said Diaz. Marcos is already preparing for his next challenge: a 15-kilometer marathon in Hawaii on 3 September, followed by a special fundraising swim in aid of children with cancer at Robert Reid Cabral Hospital. After those two events he will take a break to plan his calendar for next year, although final decisions will be made by his trainer Augusto Garcia.
