
A standoff between members of the National Police and a supposed gang of assailants left five people dead and at least three injured in an event that occurred on the night of 3 December, 2017 in Sanchez Ramirez province.
Twenty-year old Ana Deisy Batista, who was four months pregnant, and her husband, barber Estarlin Mejia were shot and killed by supposed criminals in the community of La Cueva, while the men were being chased by the police. The police then shot and killed three of the five men and two were injured.
A report in Diario Libre on Tuesday, 5 December speculates the murder of the barber was part of a contracted killing.
Provincial police spokesman, Lieutenant Alfredo Gómez, said that one of those injured was a private from the police, Raudo Rafael Díaz who was going into his home when the shootout began and was hit by a stray bullet.
According to the version from the police, the shootout happened in Calle Primera in the community of La Cueva de Cevicos, in Sánchez Ramírez.
The bodies of the five victims were taken to the morgue of the Inmaculada Concepcion hospital, and so far the only identification has been one Carlos Santos Gonzalez, and the two injured, Frank Jossie Capella and Esteban Antonio Santos González were taken to hospital under arrest.
