Agriculture MinisterÁngel Estévez says farm production is up 5.9% responding to measures implemented last year. He figures to data released by the Central Bank for the January to November 2018 period.

Estévez said that the biggest production gains were in rice production that increased from 12.2 million quintals to 12.8 million, which represents 4.9% increase, and plantains that increased from 2,399 million units to 2,530 million for an increase of 3.82%.

Cassava reached 3.8 million quintals for a 3.82% increase; yautía to 736,000 quintals for an 8.29% increase; yams increased by 9.13%, avocados reach 1,166 million units for an increase of 5.56%.

Milk increased to 835 million liters, an increase of 10.58%; eggs increased by 8.87% to reach 1,867 million units and chickens showed at 3.84% increase reaching 207 million units.

Estevez said he was happy with the increases, especially given the damage caused in the north west of the country by hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Estevez highlighted that the Dominican Republic produces 85% of the products it consumes and also exports, with agricultural exports reaching US$2,090 million last year for an increase of 1.8%.
