The Santo Domingo Metro office (OPRET) says it has the budget to repair the damaged elevators and escalators. The director of the Metro, Manuel Saleta García, said that RD$1.5 million will be invested to repair 87 elevators and escalators serving lines 1 and 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro. News reports had focused on the many escalators and elevators that are out of service, especially affecting disabled people that use the important mass transport service.
Saleta explained the delays in the repairs are due to the arrears with the contractor in charge of the maintenance of elevators and escalators installed in the Metro stations. Saleta Garcia said orders for the spare parts have already been placed and in less than two weeks the maintenance operations would begin.
