The authorities from the Ministry of Public health have confirmed that the four year old Haitian child who died at Vinicio Calventi Hospital, in Los Alcarrizos, was indeed suffering from diphtheria. According to Vice Minister of Collective Health, Héctor Quezada, the results were confirmed by laboratory tests, but all other cases checked came back negative.
The child died on 25 March 2018, having recently arrived in the country from Belladere, Haiti.
In 2016 there were three official deaths from diphtheria, imported from Haiti, where there was an outbreak affecting more than 400 registered cases.
