
Farmers in San Juan de la Maguana province have reduced the area planted in rice this crop this year due to concerns about the long standing drought affecting the southwest. Water levels are low in the Sabaneta Dam. The National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) has advised the region’s farmers to reduce crop acreage this year. Olgo Fernández of Indhri said the recommendation to reduce rice planting has already been passed on to Agriculture Minister Osmar Benítez and the general administrator of the Agriculture Bank, Carlos Segura Foster and to administrative minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta.
In an interview on D’Agenda with Hector Herrera Cabral, Segura explained the decision was taken because there just is not enough water to guarantee successful rice harvests.
