An Italian man and his partner died on the evening of Thursday, 5 July 2018, on the Autovía del Este from injuries suffered in a traffic accident on the highway from Santo Domingo to La Romana. Stefano Tullili died immediately after the accident, and his girlfriend Erika Cannella died at the Clínica Canela in La Romana. The couple was driving on a motorcycle when struck by a pickup truck.
