Metro goes full speed ahead

Construction work on the new Metro for Santo Domingo is going ahead full speed. Along the elevated railway section between Villa Mella and Puerto Isabella, over 90 of the 155 support columns are visible, either finished or close to completion. The excavations for the rest are under way and work teams are busy doing steel work, digging the necessary holes and moving material. The roadway alongside the Isabela River is also progressing at a rapid pace, and neighbors are joining together to ask the government to fix up the local streets while they are at it. In some areas along the railway line it has been necessary to drive in a series of pillars in order to shore up the footing for the tramway columns, but this has not held up the work significantly. Just recently, the excavation of the underground station at the intersection of Maximo Gomez and John F. Kennedy was completed.
