
The Dominican Republic is hosting four regional forums of the Central American Parliament with the participation of former presidents. Speaking at the event, Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado highlighted the Parlacen helps understand politics in the region and advance in democracy and integration tasks in the region. Vargas spoke on behalf of President Danilo Medina during the opening of the Regional Parlacen Forums on Monday, 27 August 2018. The events are taking place at the Ministry of Foreign Relations convention center and Santo Domingo city hotels.
Former Presidents Martin Torrijos of Panama, Vinicio Cerezo of Guatemala, Jose Arnoldo Aleman of Nicaragua and Leonel Fernandez and Hipolito Mejia of the Dominican Republic are also participating. Also the secretary general of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro and a delegation from the Russian Duma.
“Central America is composed of relatively small countries. Acting as a block is the most effective way to exert a greater influence in international organizations and call attention more vigorously to our needs and aspirations,” said Vargas.
The four forums are:
“The New School, Qualitative Analysis of Education Policies in Central America and the Dominican Republic,” with the participation of Education Minister Andrés Navarro.
“Labor Rights of Women,” and “Women in Political Parties” with the participation of Vice President Margarita Cedeño.
“The Role and Future of Political Parties to 2030”
“Micro and Small Businesses in Tourism and their Impact on Local Development” with the participation of Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García.
