DR getting tough on crime

After a marathon meeting with high-ranking military officials, the chief of the Police and the heads of the principle security organizations of the Dominican Republic, President Leonel Fernandez told the press that his team was drawing a strategy to block the use of the Dominican territory as a bridge for trafficking illegal drugs to the United States and European markets. The plan would be to give the authorities absolute control of the national territory in the face of criminal elements. Just a few months ago, United States ambassador Hans Hertell said that the country was being “bombarded by drugs.” The plan is to put a halt to the drug trafficking and, at the same time, provide security for residents and lower crime.
