According to a Ministry of Education technician, 95% of parents in different uptown neighborhoods including Capotillo, Gualey, and Las Canitas, use alcohol at levels that adversely affect the student population as reported by Listin Diario. Mara del Carmen Genao reports that drug abuse has diminished in these neighborhoods. She emphasizes the need to create awareness about the consequences of these habits. Her department is holding successful workshops in the neighborhoods regarding the effects of the use of alcohol and tobacco on the students. The workshops have already been held in Capotillo, Gualey, Las Canitas, Maria Auxiliadora and Los Guandules.
