The drought may last a long time

According to the last food security analysis by the World Food Program (WFP) conditions are favorable for the El Niño phenomenon in 2018. Depending on its evolution, these drier than average conditions in the Dominican Republic may continue into 2019, possibly leading to a delayed start and unfavorable early stages of the 2019 spring season.

Due to the drought, the livelihoods of the most vulnerable populations (laborers and small farmers), in particular in the Azua, Montecristi and Puerto Plata are being affected. Assessments are ongoing.
