
According to the director of the Special Fund for Agriculture Development (FEDA), Casimiro Ramos, the production of pineapples has increased from 97 million units for each of the last few years to 200 million this year. He said that in 2012 the exports of pineapples reached around US$2.5 million and production now stands at US$10 million.
He went on to say that FEDA had around 400 producers who had received RD$189 million from the surprise visits of President Danilo Median La Cueva de Cevicos, in Sánchez Ramírez and the area of Monte Plata.
Ramos was speaking at the Pineapple Congress held in a hotel in Santo Domingo. He said that following orders from President Medina some 10 million pineapple plants were imported from Costa Rica and this had contributed to the increase in production.
