The 51st Livestock Fair opened over the weekend with the President and the First Lady attending the opening ceremonies. The fair is dedicated to cattlemen Fernando Cabrera and Manuel Gil. The fairground is at the capital’s Feria Ganadera on the 30 de Mayo Highway, just east of the Nunez de Caceres intersection. The chairperson of the National Livestock Association’s board of directors, Miguel A. Zaglul, told the inaugural audience that over the last few years the livestock production sector has become more productive with lowering costs. He cited the example of pork which saw an increase of 22,000 breeding females and a lower of cost of over RD$20 pesos per pound. Poultry production increased from 9.2 million units per month to 14.2 million and the cost per pound fell from RD$37.00 to RD$19.95 on the farms. Egg production has increased by nearly 36 million units per month with a corresponding decrease in price. The fair will be open all this week.
