Five police and army officers who worked at the Punta Caucedo port terminal were arrested by the Armed Forces for their involvement in a customs tax evasion fraud worth more than RD$60 million. They were taken from the terminal to the J-2 Armed Forces Intelligence Division where they are being questioned regarding the case, according to a report in Listin Diario. Intelligence sources determined that the suspects have multi-million bank accounts. The suspects are a captain, a first lieutenant, and two second lieutenants in the Police, and an army first lieutenant. According to Customs authorities, the suspects used to evade the taxes by reporting merchandise as raw material for free zones and with the complicity of Customs officials would withdraw them from the warehouses using forged receipts. Former Customs tax collector Esteban Cubilete and another twenty officials have been fired in connection with this case.
