Distracted whale rescued

A Ministry of Environment brigade has saved a whale measuring approximately 35 feet, which was beached on the Popa beach in Monte Cristi province. The whale was on its way to the warm waters of Samana Bay, but got too close to shore and when the tide receded, it got stuck on land. The whale remained on the Monte Cristi coast for two days before the Ministry of Environment was alerted and was able to detach it, as reported in Hoy newspaper. The brigade was able to save the very heavy whale by waiting for a high tide and pushing it back into the sea. “There was much concern that the whale would die for lack of food and water,” said brigade chief Jose Francisco Taveras Castro, administrator of the Monte Cristi national park. The whale was one of the thousands of humpbacks that make the trip from Greenland to Samana Bay, where they mate and breed.
