The recent decrease in the price of Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) should have a positive effect on the price of electricity for parts of the Dominican Republic. According to the report carried in today’s Hoy, the price of LNG has fallen from US$13.51 per MMBTU (one million British Thermal Units) to US$6.69 MMBTU on the New York Mercantile Exchange. 2006 opened with a tendency to go lower that other fossil fuels that are processed from crude oil. Since the beginning of February LNG has been priced less than Number Six Fuel Oil, the principal fuel used to generate electricity in the DR. In the Dominican Republic the AES generation facilities at Andres, Boca Chica and at Los Mina in eastern Santo Domingo use this fuel. Combined, these two generators produce in excess of 325 MW of power.
