The Dominican Republic has avenged its loss to Venezuela in the Caribbean Winter Baseball Series in style. The all-star team beat up on Venezuela 11-5, with home runs by David, “Big Papi”, Ortiz and Adrian Beltre. Playing in the Disney Wide World of Sports Stadium in Orlando, Florida, the Dominican team established an early lead in the inaugural game of Group D of the World Baseball Classic. Big Papi started things off with a two-run homer in the second inning off of the Chicago Cubs’ Carlos Zambrano, giving the DR a 2-0 lead. Starting pitcher Bartolo Colon did not allow a run, giving up just one hit and a base on balls in three innings. Meanwhile, the boys with the bats were working on the Venezuelan pitching. In the fifth inning, the Dominicans sealed the victory with a four-run rally capped by Adrian Beltre’s first homer of the day. The 6-1 lead was challenged by the Venezuelans as they came up with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added a run in each of the following innings. However, Julian Tavarez came in to pitch the seventh and eighth innings and halted the pressure from the South Americans. In the Dominican half of the ninth inning, Ortiz, with a man aboard took the ball out of the park, and the crowd shouted “Papi, Papi, Papi” as he rounded the bases. Three batters later, Beltre followed suit and that sealed the fate of the Venezuelans, as reliever Danilo Sanchez shut out the side.
