Anadegas backs down before army takeover

The National Association of Gasoline Retailers (ANADEGAS) has decided to return to the negotiating table and asked its members to renew their orders for fuels from the gasoline wholesalers. This action came after the government started sending troops to gas stations, in Santo Domingo, to guarantee fuel sales to the public. Julio I. Espaillat told reporters that “the decision was taken because of the flexible nature of the board of directors which had been granted powers of negotiation after a private meeting with government representatives last Friday.” As part of the agreement, ANADEGAS has re-initiated the purchase of fuels, and agreed to a meeting this coming Tuesday, 14 March. Espaillat said that the basic issues that need to be solved are the removal of privileges granted to wholesale distributors tied to the major companies as well as the reposition of the losses caused by temperature differentials as established by Law 112. El Caribe reporters looked around Santo Domingo and found that most gasoline stations were operating normally.
