Physician convicted for malpractice

Orlando Cristian Duarte Garrido was found guilty of the involuntary homicide of Maria Marcelino Castro de Bonilla, and sentenced to three months in prison by Judge Yuly Tamariz of the National District Criminal Chamber. Clinica Abreu was also told to pay RD$11 million in compensation for moral and material damages caused and a RD$100,000 fine. According to the judge, the physician was guilty of “clumsiness, impudence, and failure to comply with medical regulations”. Castro de Bonilla died 8 on October 2001 while undergoing medical evaluations to obtain her US resident’s visa. Duarte Garrido accidentally punctured the patient’s heart instead of a tumor he was meant to analyze.
