On Monday, 21 January 2019 President Danilo Medina was in the eastern city of Higuey for Church’s Basilica de la Altagracia in Higuey to pray.
The media reported on the chaos outside the Basilica when the President arrived in time to participate in the 10am mass. Medina was accompanied by First Lady Cándida Montilla; Education Science and Technology Minister Alejandrina Germán; Defense Minister Rubén Darío Paulino Sem, Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo; Presidency Minister Gustavo Montalvo, and other government representatives.
In the gardens outside the church, many people came prepared with tents to camp out for a few days, and candles, food and clothes were all for sale in a temporary market.
