Woman to preside Drug Council

President Leonel Fernandez has appointed lawyer Mabel Feliz Baez to preside over the National Drugs Council (CND), replacing General Jose Anibal Sanz Jiminian. Decree 89-06 dated 10 March 2006 announces the appointment. This is the first time that a woman holds this post, which was created in May 1988. Since the change of government in 2004, the fight against drugs in the DR has resulted in many more crackdowns and major busts of strong drug holdings in the country. Given the governance chaos in neighboring Haiti, that has been called a narco-state, the DR has in recent years become a transshipment center for moving the drugs between South America, Haiti and the United States territorial jurisdiction.
