With a month to go for the Congressional and municipal elections, the Central Electoral Board distributed RD$593.7 million to 22 political parties yesterday to help finance their political campaigns for the 16 May election. During the election, citizens may vote for 32 senators, 178 deputies, 151 mayors and 962 councilmen and their replacements. The Electoral Law establishes that 80% of the resources need to be divided among the parties that obtained more than 5% of the vote in the previous elections. The remaining 20% is divided 12% in equal parts to parties that obtained on average between 5-8%, in proportion to the votes obtained. According to the law, the PRD, PLD and PRSC received RD$158.6 million each.
