Yesterday, Monday 25 February a fire broke out at Flexo Pack, a plastic bag factory located in the Haina Industrial Zone, and several businesses nearby evacuated their personnel as a precaution.
Freddy Abreu, president of the company , said that because only the security staff was at the company, no persons were injured. He said losses are in the millions. Media reports say the factory was totalled.
Firefighters were called at 7am. Civil Defense and 911 Emergency System units were also sent in. 20 fire additional units from Haina and Greater Santo Domingo and two helicopters had been sent to put out of the fire. The blaze was under control by the early afternoon, according to media reports.
It took the first fire trucks four minutes to get to the factory but there were delays in putting out the fire because of the lack of water in the area. Businessman Celso Marranzini, speaking for the company, criticized that a large water tank on site had not been completed because the city government had demanded taxes for the construction when the company was exempt because it is located in a free zone industry zone.
To compensate for the lack of water in Haina, the Santo Domingo Water and Sewage Corporation (CAASD), the National Potable Water Institute (INAPA) and the Ministry of Public Works sent in water tanker trucks.
