DR has the highest amount of confiscated heroin

According to a report issued on Tuesday, 5 March 2019, by the Junta Internacional de Fiscalización de Estupefacientes (JIFE), the Dominican Republic and Guatemala are the two countries in Central America and the Caribbean where the highest quantity of heroin was confiscated in 2017. The countries are used as staging posts for drugs to be sent to the main markets in the United States and Europe.

JIFE cites there has been an increase in market share of cocaine and marihuana smuggling. Cannabis is the most used drug in the region with 2.8% of the population having used it. This is followed by cocaine at 0.7%, amphetamines with 0.2% and ecstasy 0.1%.
