While recognizing the efforts of the government in the province, the Council for the Strategic Development of Santiago (CDES) has issued a call for a series of infrastructure projects that will aid in the economic development of the province as well as the entire region. These projects are the completion of the highway expansion from Navarrete to Puerto Plata; the enlargement of port facilities in Manzanillo to serve large ships; the MercaCibao marketplace and the Cibao Trade Center.

The council includes 72 organizations. It says it is focusing on five areas:
An alliance between government and the private sector for the care of the parks; the local economy, jobs and business creation; the free zones; the port of Manzanillo and the Merca Cibao as an outlet for the region’s farm produce. The environment is an important part of all of these efforts.

Mirtha Saleta and Yeniffer Cruz, the project manager and communications director, also talked about some of the other current programs now underway. These include the cleanup of the Gurabo Creek, the Central Park (at the old airport), the Botanical Gardens, the Aqueduct, and the zoning of the area.
