As part of their 158th anniversary celebrations of the 2 May 1861 battle against Spanish annexation, the city of Moca, the provincial capital of the province of Espaillat, has declared Diario Libre director Adriano Miguel Tejada a “Meritorious Son” of the city. Tejada, a noted jurist, writer, historian and leader of the first free newspaper in the Dominican Republic, is also a university professor of some note and a standing member of the Dominican Academy of History.

The battle is often cited as the start of the independence restoration spirit, which came to fruition in the battle of Capotillo, two years later.
