Gallup: 24% say President Medina will be reelected

The Gallup-Hoy April 2019 survey focuses on several political scenarios that include President Danilo Medina despite the constitutional ban for him to do so.

When Dominicans were asked by Gallup pollsters who will be the next President the top five candidates were: Danilo Medina 23.9%, Leonel Fernández 17.4%, Luis Abinader 17.2%, Margarita Cedeño 4.9%, Ramfis Domínguez Trujillo 1.8%. Of the top five mentioned spontaneously by those polled, Domínguez is not eligible to run as per the 2015 Constitution that requires a citizen of another country to have renounced that citizenship 10 years prior to pursuing the Dominican presidential position. Domínguez is a US citizen.

When asked if the presidential elections were today, for which party would the person vote for, the top five answers were: PLD 38.2%, PRM 25.3%, PRD 4.3%, PRSC 1.8%, Alianza Pais 1.5%. After 15 years of rule of the PLD, 58.4% of eligible voters polled by Gallup said it would be best for another party to govern. Only 34.8% said it is convenient for the PLD to remain in power. The government is the largest employer in the country and carries out extensive social assistance programs.

When ruling PLD followers were asked who they would vote for in a PLD primary, the responses were: Danilo Medina 49.5%, Leonel Fernandez 27.9%, Margarita Cedeño 3%, Francisco Domínguez Brito 1.1%, Reinaldo Pared Pérez 1.1%, Radhames Segura 0.2%, Francisco Javier García 0.2%, Abel Martínez 0.2%, Andrés Navarro 0.2%, Temístocles Montás 0.2%, Carlos Amarante Baret 0.2%.

Among the registered members of the PLD, the response was slightly different: Danilo Medina 47%, Leonel Fernández 35.6%, Margarita Cedeño 2.4%, Francisco Domínguez Brito 1.2%, Radhames Segura 0.4%, Felix Bautista 0.4%, Juan José Rosario 0.4%, Francisco Javier García 0.4%, Andres Navarro 0.4%, Temístocles Montás 0.4%, Carlos Amarante Baret 0.4%.

Of the voters that are partisan to the PRM, 78% said they would vote for Luis Abinader in a party primary, while only 9.5% would vote for Hipólito Mejía, and 1.5% for David Collado.

Regarding the PRSC, 51.7% of the voters partisan to that party said they do not know who should be the presidential candidate for that party, while 34% said it should be Federico Antún Batlle, the party president, or deputy Víctor Bisonó with 13.8%.

Regarding, the PRD, a leading ally to the PLD in the present government of Medina, of those who said they follow that party, 59.3% said they do not know who should be the presidential candidate. 25.9% said it should be Miguel Vargas Maldonado, 5.6% chose Guido Gómez Mzara and 1.9% Tony Peña Guaba.

Among minority parties, 37% responded that Guillermo Moreno should be the candidate to the presidency for the Alianza País.

The Gallup poll was undertaken from 25-29 April 2019 with 1,200 participants, and a margin of error of +/- 2.8%.
