Hipólito Mejía is confident he will win the PRM primary

Former President Hipólito Mejía says he will not back down from his aspirations to be the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) presidential candidate in the 2020 general elections. He made the comments after former Vice President Milagros Ortiz Bosch recommended that the party gain time and from now name businessman Luis Abinader as the candidate. Polls show Abinader is significantly above Mejía in voter preferences.

Mejía, nevertheless, is optimistic the outcome of the primary set for 6 October 2019 will favor him. His supporters forecast he will win the primary with 70% of the vote because teams are hard at work registering followers to the PRM voter list that will be used for the primary. The registration period closes on 2 June 2019.

So far, those who have announced they aspire to run for president on the PRM ticket are 78-year old former President Hipólito Mejía, 51-year old businessman Luis Abinader and 43-year old deputy Wellington Arnaud.
