The Dominican Karate Federation has appealed the silver medal won by Maria Dimitrova in the Pan Am Games in karate. As reported, she lost the gold to US competitor Sakura Kokumai because she misspelled “kata”.
Dimitrova would go on to win gold with two fellow team members, Sasha Rodríguez and Franchel Valázquez, in the kata modality.
The Dominican Karate Federation has requested a review of the case before the Pan-American Karate Confederation. There is hope she could get her hard-won gold.
