
While Tropical Storm Karen took a north course when passing by Puerto Rico, the large storm did bring intense rains to the Dominican Republic. There was flooding in Constanza when Tireo River overflowed, damaging roads and bridges. Residents in the farming area said the damages to agriculture will be significant.
The Center for Emergency Operations issued alerts for Santiago, La Vega, La Romana, Valverde, San Juan, Santiago Rodríguez, Espaillat, La Altagracia, Hato Mayor, San Pedro, Monte Plata, Baoruco, Monseñor Nouel and Dajabón.
The National Meteorology Office (Onamet) forecast rains will continue affecting the northwest, northeast, north, southwest, central mountain range and the border provinces.
The Civil Defense reported the deaths of 56-year old Edilio Antonio Torres and 40-year old Wilkin Cruz on Sunday, 22 September 2019, due to flooding of Maguana River in Monción, Santiago Rodríguez. They were driving through the intense rains in a Suzuki jeep that was dragged into the river waters.
Relief crews say they avoided other tragedies by popular river bathing sites and closing these off in San José de las Matas, Jánico, Amina, Sabaneta, Jarabacoa, Yásica, Jamao Al Norte, Gaspar Hernández and others in the provinces of Santiago, La Vega, Santiago Rodríguez, Puerto Plata y Valverde. The COE warned residents to not visit these sites on days of intense rains.
