The Dominican Republic called for the situation in Haiti to be discussed in a meeting of the United Nations Security Council said Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado. The DR is a non-permanent member of the council. The meeting was held on Thursday to call for dialogue in Haiti and greater involvement in that country of the international community. The economic, social and political crisis has escalated in Haiti. Groups are demanding the resignation of President Jovenel Moise. A shortage of fuel in Haiti has aggravated the situation and triggered more violent protests.
“As members of the Security Council, we call a meeting to be held today, calling for a national dialogue in Haiti and also for a greater contribution from the international community in this crisis,” Vargas told reporters in Santo Domingo.
UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said on Tuesday that security incidents and road closures had affected humanitarian programs of the United Nations and non-governmental organizations.
