Santiago city rescinds hotel construction permit, demands reopening of road

The City Council of Santiago announced the cancelling of the land use permits for the construction of a hotel in the city center. In May of this year, five workers died at the construction site buried under a collapsed dirt wall. The Grupo Desarrollo de Proyectos del Cibao (Deproc) was the builder of the 130-room AC Marriott Santiago.

The City Council during the same session urged the construction company to take immediate actions to reopen the road section. Vehicular traffic and the operations of several businesses in the area have been disrupted since the tragedy.

“It’s been five months now and the City Council has been monitoring this situation and due to the refusal of the construction company we are forced to rescind the land use permits that this company has to work on the project until they resolve the situation created in the Calle El Sol area,” said Fernández Ramírez, speaking for Santiago Mayor Abel Martínez.
