CamachoCorruptoChallange is trending topic

The hashtag #CamachoCorruptoChallange was the trending topic of the day in the social network Twitter, where users have shared the most varied comments. The hashtag originated after the arrest of baseball fan Máximo Eladio Romero after he criticized the flaunting of wealth by the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Radhamés Camacho, at the ball game at the Quisqueya Stadium. Upon leaving the stadium, 32-year old Romero was arrested and spent the night in jail. His “crime” was having remarked when seeing the whisky being served to the deputy: “Now that you are drinking whisky, Camacho, share with us some beer with your cash.”

Romero’s arrest has been interpreted by most as an abuse of power. The event was the trending topic in all social media, as well as radio and TV talk shows, and even took up lots of time of the programs dedicated to sports.

Romero asked Camacho to buy him and his friend some beers after observing the expensive whisky Camacho had purchased at the ballpark during the Sunday, Licey vs. Escogido game.

Camacho would disassociate himself from the imprisonment, claiming he had nothing to do with it. Camacho attributed the arrest to the stadium security. Camacho said he learned of the arrest the next day. Romero was arrested by a Police patrol.

The Dominican Baseball League (Lidom) published a statement whereby it indicated that neither its security services nor the security services of the Licey Tigers Ball Club, the host team for the game on Sunday, had anything to do with the arrest of the fan. Lidom reiterated its commitment to security at the stadiums and the freedom of expression of fans within the framework of Dominican laws.

During the Tuesday, 29 October game between Licey and Aguilas, thousands of baseball fans that filled the ballpark rallied against corruption calling out “Camacho Ladrón.”

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, after months of pressure from many sectors, presented his wealth statement posting RD$2.8 billion in assets. Camacho is a career public school professor turned politician. Numerous press reports have demanded he present the origin of his impressive fortune.
