Janet Camilo, president of the electoral commission of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), explained that the party did not register a presidential candidate for the May 2020 election because it is giving time to complete a political alliance. Camilo said that by law the party can reserve the announcement of the presidential candidacy, as it did.
She explained the deadline for presenting alliances and coalitions is 18 November 2019. She said the Political Parties Law 33-18 establishes as 3 December 2019 the deadline for registering reserved candidates for the municipal level and 18 February 2020 for the congressional and presidential level.
The PRD has been a strong ally to the government of President Danilo Medina. PRD president is the Minister of Foreign Relations Miguel Vargas Maldonado. Camilo is the incumbent Minister of Women.
