Hunger on the rise

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), hunger increased throughout Latin America in 2018 and affected 42.5 million people, which is 6.5% of the region. The FAO, nevertheless, says that the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Mexico and Bolivia are among the countries that have been successful in reducing hunger.

In Latin America in general, hunger increased in the population since 2104 by 4.5 million according to the report “Panorama of Food and Nutrition Security in Latin America and the Caribbean 2019” that was presented in Santiago in Chile.

It states that the country with the most hunger is Haiti, with almost half of the population suffering from hunger (49.3%). Venezuela is the country where malnutrition has increased the most going. It has gone from 2.9 million people from 2013 and 2015 to 6.8 million from 2016 to 2018.

The countries with the lowest percentage of malnutrition are Brazil, Cuba and Uruguay, with hunger affecting under 2.5% of their population.

According to the report, 24% of the population of Latin America, around 105 million people are suffering from obesity. This is almost double the world average at 13.2%.
