Diabetes is a major health issue in the Dominican Republic with as many as 2,000,000 persons, either diabetic or pre-diabetic, according to a recent study. The study released by the National Institute for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Nutrition (INDEN) and ratified by the Pan American Health Organization shows that 13.34% of the population is diabetic and 9.3% is pre-diabetic (or 2.2 million people).
The statistics show an upward trend for diabetes in the country. INDEN receives 20-30 adults and 10-12 children each day as new patients and this adds up to about 1,000 per month. The best and worst of this case is that the INDEN has a list of 500 children with type 2 diabetes. The director of the INDEN, Ammar Ibrahim said that these children receive free care.
