The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) declared on Monday, 18 November 2019 that there is no constitutional or legal impediment for former President Leonel Fernandez to be nominated as presidential candidate for the 2020 elections by the Dominican Workers Party (PTD). The legal recourse had been presented to the TSE by Francisco Antonio Ventura Felipe in opposition to resolution No. 4 of the XII Electoral Convention of the Dominican Workers Party dated 27 October 2019, in which the PTD, Leonel Fernández Reyna and the Central Electoral Board (JCE), the latter as co-defendants, appeared as defendants.
The high court rejected an appeal filed by a leader of the Dominican Workers Party (PTD) against the assembly decision whereby the party would become The Force of the People (La Fuerza del Pueblo) and would nominate Leonel Fernández as its presidential candidate for the 2020 elections.
The JCE has yet to accept the switch of name from Dominican Workers Party (PTD) to The Force of the People Party (LFP). The Social Christian Reformist Party and the National Progressive Force (Fuerza Nacional Progresista – FNP) party have submitted the candidacy of the former president of the ruling Dominican Liberation Party for President.
The decision by the TSE overrides any decision to the contrary that could come from the Central Electoral Board (JCE) that has said it will wait to hear from the Constitutional Court on the matter.
