During the opening of the People’s Republic of China Trade Expo, Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s commitment to strengthen bilateral ties with the People’s Republic of China to continue to generate benefits for the citizens of both states. The exhibition is open at the Ministry of Foreign Relations Convention Center until 21 November 2019. It is the eighth People’s Republic of China trade show held in the country.
“Events like this reaffirm the commitment of each of the parties to continue deepening the ties of our relations, and thus achieve greater integration between our peoples,” said the Dominican Foreign Minister.
Vargas made the remarks during the opening ceremony of the exhibition when he received from China Ambassador Zhang Run two buses donated by the Chinese Embassy to the Ministry of Foreign Relations (Mirex).
Vargas thanked the People’s Republic of China for all the effort and dedication contributed so that the relations”are what they are today: a door with ample possibilities for each one of the Chinese and Dominican citizens”. Foreign Minister Vargas had traveled to China in May 2018 to sign for the Dominican Republic for the symbolic signing that opened full diplomatic relations with China.
Miguel Vargas also recognized Ambassador Run and his team and said he is sure that there are many joint projects yet to be executed. “You can be sure that in the Dominican Republic you have a sister nation that you can count on, just as I know we can count on you,” said Vargas.
The Chinese Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the China International Chamber of Commerce (CCOIC), and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Dominican Republic organized the trade show.
The editorial published in the 19 November 2019 Diario Libre focuses on the accepting of the two buses donated to the Ministry of Foreign Relations. Ines Aizpún, the managing editor, writes: “This struggle to demonstrate the progress made, on the one hand, and to accept whatever aid circulates around the world, on the other, complicates the country’s image.
“One cannot be rich and poor at the same time. We cannot admit that corruption takes hundreds, billions of pesos a year, and at the same time, accept the money from foreign cooperation because we are a poor country, in the process of development at most.”
