On deadline for registering municipal candidacies

Tuesday, 3 December 2019 is the deadline for political parties to register the candidacies for the municipal elections scheduled for 16 February 2020. Electoral Regime Law 15-19 establishes that the candidacies be submitted 75 days before the election. The registrations need to be presented to 158 electoral boards located nationwide.

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) then has until 9 December to accept or reject the candidacies. Three days after, on 13 December, the appeals to these decisions will be heard. The final decisions need to be announced by 18 December.

The day before the deadline, former President Leonel Fernández said he is backing former National District Mayor Johnny Ventura to return to the position. Fernández seeks to run for the Partido de los Trabajadores-La Fuerza del Pueblo political party. He made the announcement in an activity at the rooftop club of the Novocentro on 2 December 2019. Ventura is 79 years old. He is a legendary merengue band leader.

There is speculation whether National District Mayor David Collado will run for reelection on the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) ticket.
