Centro Economico Cibao: Abinader will win the presidential election

An opinion poll carried out by the Centro Economico Cibao reveals that more than 60% of electors believe that the presidential elections will be won in the first round, whereas 24.4% think a second round and 15% do not know.

The research revealed that if the election is won in the first round, 47.6% say it will go to Luis Abinader of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). 24.5% say Gonzalo Castillo of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) will win. 17.6% say that former President Leonel Fernández will be elected for a fourth term.

If none of the candidates reaches the 50%+ 1 vote needed to win in a first round, the poll reveals that voters believe the second round will match Gonzalo Castillo and Luis Abinader. Abinader then would win with 59.9%, compared to 32.8% for Castillo.

Abinader has the most support in the capital city (60%), the north (62.5%), the south (53.4%) and the east (53.4%). Castillo is weakest in support from Greater Santo Domingo voters (30.9%), the north (31.7%), the south (35.8%) and the east (37.3%).

When asked whether the country was heading in the right direction, 65% said no, 28.3% said yes and 6.7% did not know.

The research was carried out on 29, 30 November and 1 December 2019 with a sample of 1,400 eligible voters, a confidence level of 95% and a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6%.
