Pedro Silverio Alvarez / Argentarium

Pedro Silverio Alvarez, the former dean of economics at PUCMM and general manager of the Central Bank, has joined the economic team of Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) presidential candidate Luis Abinader. In an op-ed piece in Diario Libre he explains why he joined fellow economists Alejandro Fernandez and Jochi Vicente, who also will be backing Abinader.

He listed his motivations giving insights into the Abinader promise. He argued he is convinced Abinader will run an ethical and transparent government. He said Abinader has committed to appoint an independent Justice Ministry that be capable of investigating the corruption of other political parties, and any arising within his own party. Silverio said that an independent and efficient justice is essential.

Silverio said he is also motivated by being able to contribute to revert the deterioration of Dominican government institutions, mostly related to corruption. He said Abinader has committed to reorganize the state. He remarked many government institutions have no reason to exist or are duplications. He said there is an educational system that does not show results and the health system is close to collapsing.

He said that Abinader is aware of the decisive role economic stability plays in the quality of life of Dominicans. He said his commitment is to strengthen the macroeconomic framework with monetary and fiscal policies that provide for better quality of economic growth, with price stability and less dependency on borrowing.

He said he perceives there is the political will in the PRM to advance firmly forward.
