Representatives of the Santiago Development Association (APEDI), Puerto Plata Chamber of Commerce and Production and the North Yaque Water Fund signed an agreement to create the Atlantic Zone Water Fund to finance the recovery of the rivers in the province of Puerto Plata. The focus would be primarily on the Yásica and Bajabonico river systems in the northern Cibao region.
As reported, the Ministry of Energy and Mines has been collaborating with the Puerto Plata Chamber of Commerce and Production in a program named “Cultivating Good Water” (Cultivando Aguas Buenas) in the Yásica watershed in the community of Pedro Garcia. In 2019 the area to be covered was expanded by a joint agreement to include the town of Yásica Arriba and the municipality of Altamira.
Fernando Capellán, the president of APEDI, noted the association’s commitment to coordinate the project. He emphasized that APEDI already has a lot of experience in the area since it headed the formation of the very first Water Fund in the Dominican Republic with the North Yaque Water Fund, and the trust fund that sustains it.
Dr. Benito Ferreira, PhD, the rector of the ISA University and head of the North Yaque Water Fund, noted that the fund has been operating for three years now and the experiences are serving as reference points throughout Latin America.
