Argentine surcharge is a blow to Dominican tourism

The new “tourist dollar” policy in Argentina assesses a surcharge over the official rate for purchases for foreign travel. The measure should have a significant effect on the number of Argentine tourists traveling to Dominican resorts. Around 200,000 Argentines visited the Dominican Republic in 2018. Most flew in on Aerolíneas Argentinas and came to spend one or two weeks at a Punta Cana resort.

The 30% surcharge over the official rate affects the cost of airline tickets and hotel stays and makes Dominican vacations more expensive for Argentine tourists. The PAIS tax is to be in effect for five years.
